Ingredients

For the cake:

-1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

-1 cup cocoa powder

-1 teaspoon baking powder

-1 teaspoon baking soda

-3/4 teaspoon salt

-3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

-2 cups granulated sugar

-2 teaspoons vanilla extract

-4 large eggs

-1/2 cup sour cream

-1/2 cup warm water

For the caramel sauce:

-1 cup granulated sugar

-1/4 cup light corn syrup

-1/4 teaspoon salt

-1/2 cup heavy cream

-2 tablespoons unsalted butter

-1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

For the cake:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Set aside.

3. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add in the vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time, mixing until combined after each addition. Add in the sour cream and mix until combined.

4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. With the mixer on low speed, slowly pour in the warm water and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.

5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely before adding the caramel sauce.

For the caramel sauce:

1. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar is completely dissolved. Once the sugar is dissolved, stop stirring and allow the mixture to come to a boil. Boil for 3-4 minutes, or until the mixture begins to turn a light golden-brown color. Remove from the heat and carefully stir in the heavy cream.

2. Add in the butter and vanilla extract and stir until combined. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before pouring over the cooled cake.
