Ingredients

For this recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 6.6 lbs (3 kg) Maris Otter Pale Malt
  • 1 lb (0.45 kg) Roasted Barley
  • 8 oz (227 g) Chocolate Malt
  • 8 oz (227 g) Flaked Oats
  • 1 oz (28 g) East Kent Goldings hops, 5.2%AA
  • 1 oz (28 g) Fuggles hops, 4.5%AA
  • 1 tsp yeast nutrient
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) freshly brewed coffee
  • 1 package of English Ale Yeast

Instructions

To begin, you will need to mash your grains. To do this, heat 5 gallons (19 liters) of water to 155°F (68°C). Once the water is at temperature, add your grains and stir to combine. Make sure the temperature stays between 148-158°F (64-70°C) for an hour. After the mash is complete, you can sparge the grains with additional water to collect the wort.

Once the wort has been collected, it’s time to boil. Bring the wort to a boil and add the hops. Boil for 60 minutes, stirring occasionally. After the boil is complete, add the yeast nutrient and coffee and stir to combine. Then, cool the wort to 68°F (20°C) and pitch your yeast. Ferment for two weeks at 68°F (20°C).

Once the beer has finished fermenting, it is time to bottle or keg. Prime the beer with a small amount of sugar and bottle or keg as usual. Let the beer condition for two weeks before serving.

Equipment

To brew this beer, you will need the following equipment:

  • Mash tun
  • Brew pot (at least 5 gallons/19 liters)
  • Stirring spoon
  • Hydrometer or refractometer
  • Thermometer
  • Bottling bucket or keg
  • Bottles or kegs
  • Bottle filler or keg filler

Notes

It is important to make sure that the temperature of the mash stays between 148-158°F (64-70°C) for an hour. If the temperature goes too low, the enzymes may not work properly and the beer may not have the desired character. Additionally, be sure to use freshly brewed coffee for this recipe. The flavor of the coffee can fade quickly and using old coffee can result in a stale-tasting beer.
