The muffins are baked in a donut-shaped pan, giving them their unique shape and texture. The chocolate flavor comes from cocoa powder and semi-sweet chocolate chips. To finish them off, they are dipped in a simple glaze made with powdered sugar and a few other ingredients.

These muffins are perfect for any occasion. Serve them warm with a cup of coffee or tea for a cozy breakfast or snack. They also make a great after-dinner treat. No matter how you serve them, these chocolate donut muffins are sure to be a hit!

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • For the Glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 12-cup donut-shaped muffin pan with butter or cooking spray.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter and sugar until combined. Add the eggs and whisk until well combined. Add the buttermilk and vanilla extract and whisk until combined.

Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Divide the batter evenly among the muffin cups. Bake for 15-17 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean. Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

To make the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Dip the tops of the cooled muffins in the glaze and let set before serving.

Equipment

  • Bowls
  • Whisk
  • Spoon
  • Donut-shaped muffin pan
  • Toothpick
  • Wire cooling rack

Notes

For a more intense chocolate flavor, you can substitute some of the all-purpose flour with cocoa powder. If you don’t have a donut-shaped muffin pan, you can use a regular muffin pan and shape the muffins into donut shapes after they are baked and cooled.
