Ingredients
For the cake: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup dark cocoa powder 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup butter, softened 2 cups granulated sugar 4 large eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 1 teaspoon orange zest 1/4 cup strong brewed coffee For the frosting: 4 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 cup butter, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup dark cocoa powder 1/4 cup heavy cream For the decorations: Festive sprinkles Chocolate chips Crushed candy canes Equipment: 9-inch springform cake pan Mixing bowls Electric mixer Whisk Spatula Piping bag
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease a 9-inch springform cake pan with butter and set aside. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined. 3. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating until combined. Beat in the vanilla extract, orange juice, and orange zest. 4. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Stir in the coffee. 5. Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan and bake for 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes before transferring to a serving plate. 6. To make the frosting, beat together the confectioners’ sugar, butter, and vanilla extract in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in the cocoa powder until combined. Add the heavy cream and beat until the frosting is light and fluffy. 7. Spread the frosting over the cooled cake. Top with festive sprinkles, chocolate chips, and crushed candy canes. Serve and enjoy!
Notes
For an even richer cake, substitute the butter for melted dark chocolate. You can also add 1/2 cup of chopped nuts or dried fruit to the cake batter. For a vegan version, use vegan butter and substitute the eggs with flax eggs (1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons of water per egg). For a gluten-free version, use a gluten-free flour blend and make sure all other ingredients are gluten-free.
